How often should you replace your eyeglasses?

It’s a question we hear quite often at Matador Eyeworks. And the honest answer is: there isn’t a set expiration date for a pair of eyeglasses.

Some people change their glasses every couple of years. Others have a favourite pair that they have worn for much longer. If your prescription hasn’t changed, your lenses are in good condition and your frames still fit properly, there may be no reason to replace them simply because a certain amount of time has passed.

But there are some pretty good signs that it might be time for a new pair.

Your Prescription Has Changed

The most obvious reason to replace your eyeglasses is that your prescription has changed.

If things don’t seem as clear as they used to, you’re squinting more, or you’re finding yourself holding things farther away to see them comfortably, it may be time to have your eyes checked.

Even a small prescription change can make a noticeable difference in how comfortably you see throughout the day.

And if your prescription hasn’t changed? That’s good news. You may not need new glasses at all.

Your Frames Are Worn Out

Eyeglasses take a lot of abuse.

They get put on the top of your head, dropped on tables, tossed into bags and occasionally sat on. Over time, frames can become loose, bent or damaged.

If your glasses constantly slide down your nose, feel crooked or need frequent adjustments, it’s worth having them checked.

Sometimes a simple adjustment is all that’s needed. Other times, the frame has simply reached the end of its useful life.

Your Lenses Are Scratched

A few tiny scratches might not seem like a big deal, but scratches can become increasingly distracting, especially in bright light or when driving at night.

Once lenses are significantly scratched or damaged, replacing them can make a noticeable difference in visual comfort.

And this is one reason we always recommend treating your glasses with a little care. Using your shirt as a cleaning cloth may be convenient, but it isn’t doing your lenses any favours!

Your Glasses No Longer Fit Properly

Your glasses should sit comfortably on your face.

If they are constantly slipping, pinching behind your ears or sitting unevenly, come in and let us take a look.

At Matador Eyeworks, we can often make adjustments to improve the fit. You don’t necessarily need a new pair just because your glasses aren’t sitting quite right.

But if the frame has become stretched, damaged or simply doesn’t fit you well anymore, it may be time to find something new.

Your Lifestyle Has Changed

Sometimes the reason for new glasses has nothing to do with your prescription.

Maybe you started spending much more time at a computer. Perhaps you’re driving more at night. You may have taken up golf, fishing or another outdoor activity. Maybe you need prescription sunglasses for the first time.

Your eyewear should keep up with your life.

This is one of the reasons we like talking with our clients about how they actually use their glasses. The right lenses for someone who spends most of their day at a computer may be very different from what works best for someone who spends their days outdoors.

You Need a Second Pair

You don’t always need to replace your everyday glasses to benefit from another pair.

A second pair can be useful for many reasons. Prescription sunglasses are a great example. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, having dedicated prescription sunglasses can be much more convenient than constantly switching between regular glasses and non-prescription sunglasses.

Some people also choose a second pair for work, driving or simply because they want another look.

And yes, sometimes the reason is simply that you found another frame you love. We’re perfectly okay with that one.

Can You Keep Your Existing Frames?

Absolutely.

If you love your current frames and they’re still in good condition, it may be possible to put new prescription lenses into them.

Whether that makes sense depends on the condition of the frame, its design and your new prescription. We’ll be happy to take a look and let you know what we think.

Sometimes keeping a favourite frame is the best option.

Other times, it’s time to let it retire gracefully.

So, How Often Should You Replace Your Eyeglasses?

There isn’t one right answer.

Your prescription, the condition of your frames and lenses, how often you wear your glasses and changes in your lifestyle all play a role.

Instead of replacing your glasses simply because you’ve had them for a certain number of years, pay attention to how well they’re working for you.

Are you seeing clearly? Are they comfortable? Do they fit properly? Are the lenses still in good condition? Do they still suit what you need your glasses to do?

If the answer is yes to all of those questions, you may not need a new pair yet.

If several answers are no, it might be time for a visit.
